Your guide to an eventful August...

By: Teigan Reamsbottom

August is here, and as much as we all try to ignore it, Fall is just around the corner. Try to forget about that for a few weeks though, enjoy the hot weather ahead and take in some of the events in and around Calgary over the next month. There's a lot to choose from, and we've got a few highlights for you here:

You like to laugh? Because if you're a comedy fan or were a fan of the self-titled "show about nothing," Jerry Seinfeld is performing at the Jubilee Auditorium on August 5th. There are still a few seats left, so if you act quick, you can still get in on seeing the "Seinfeld" star live. Also coming to Calgary this month is punk rock band Blink 182 touring their new album, "Neighbourhoods," on August 28th at the Pengrowth Saddledome. Here's to hoping the plane lands safely...

If you're looking to take in some golfing before the summer is out, the Men's Expo Charity Golf Tournament is taking place on August 15th at Heatherglen Golf Course. All money raised will support men's health initiatives in Calgary. Dinner and a silent auction will also follow the tournament. Entry is open to men and women, and tickets are either $150.00/each or $500.00 for four. For more information, contact Charlene Delisle at cdelisle@dmeinc.ca.

Maybe you're a bit more into the arts? Make sure you get down to Kensington from August 19th to the 22nd for the People's Poetry Festival. Stroll down some of Kensington's narrowest alleyways and check their graffiti'd verses spread out on the walls and street art-inspired style. There's also a Beer Hall designed where competitive tweeting, brash poetic performances and salty one-liners will be taking place. Throughout the weekend, poetry contests, lectures and poetry readings will be held. For more information, head over to www.peoplespoetryfestival.com.

Sophisticated jazz music lovers and amatuer wine connoisseurs, listen up! You'll love the upcoming Wine and Jazz Festival Night on August 26th at Crowfoot Wine and Spirits Signature Store. Doors open at 8:00p.m. for music by Calgary's own Joanna Borrmeo with Monarch Live and a not-so-modest selection of wines and whiskies to accompany the mood. For those who live in Auburn Bay, August 12th brings Movie in the Park. Head down to the park before 7:00p.m. to check out the games and family activities before the film starts. This year, computer-animated musical comedy film, "Rio" will be shown. Make sure to bring lawn chairs, blankets and snacks for the show!
