Spring into Action
By Stephanie Miller, Marketing Coordinator
It might not feel like it Calgary, but its spring! Of course, the snow on the ground is keeping you from starting any gardening, but it doesn’t mean that you can’t start some spring time cleaning! Our homes go through a lot during the winter, so it’s important that you maintain your home to ensure that it continues working efficiently. Here is a look at what Alberta New Home Warranty (ANHW) suggests you check in your home for the month of April. You may need to wait for the snow to melt for some points but you can definitely get a head start on the rest!
Check eavestroughs and downspouts. These areas can get blocked by leaves, ice and debris throughout the winter. You will want to clean them out to prevent blockage.
Inspect basement for water issues. If you don’t visit your basement frequently, now is a good time to go and have a look. Any water issue should be fairly evident.
Inspect the shingles on the roof. This can easily be an area that’s overlooked. Make sure to check your roof for any shingles that could have been damaged or blown off during the winter.
Check for soil settlement at foundation. If the grade and loam has been completed on your home, check for any settlement issues and fix as necessary.
Inspect driveways and walkways. Reference your warranty materials for more information.
Clean filters on central ventilation systems (HRV’s)
Clean intake vent screens
Replace CO and smoke detector batteries
Clean range hood filters
Ensure that your home is always up to date by checking out ANHW’s monthly maintenance list here.
Once you’re confident that your home has passed the April checklist, why not follow up with some traditional spring cleaning! I thought I’d include some cleaning and organization tips to help get you started.
If you have hardwood flooring or granite countertops in your home, then you want to be sure that you’re cleaning and maintaining them properly. When cleaning hardwood floors, you want to avoid using any products that contain wax or oil based soaps and that your mop cover is always clean. Click here to find out more about care and maintenance from our supplier, Divine Hardwood. Granite is a durable product but it still needs to be treated with care. To clean granite you often just need a simple mixture of soap and water followed by drying with a cloth. For a more in depth look at resealing granite, check out our supplier, Granite Gallery’s frequently asked questions here for some great cleaning tips!
When it comes to organization, one of my favorite tools to use is baskets. It sounds simple but can easily clean up a space while still remaining functional. It’s also a great way to add a pop of color to your room!
We hope that you feel a bit more confident to start getting your home ready for spring!
Enjoy your weekend,
