We recently shared some information on the city of Calgary and why it was just voted the 5^th most liveable city in the world. From that blog post alone, it is evident to see that there are several features that make Calgary a fantastic place to live.

In an effort to attract skilled workers to the province, the Alberta Government has been promoting its ‘Alberta is Calling’ campaign since August of 2022. Phase 1 focused on attracting workers in the health care, trades and technology sectors from Toronto and Vancouver. Phase 2 targeted regions in Ontario and Atlantic Canada. Phase 3 was officially launched at the beginning of May 2024 and targets skilled trade workers in British Columbia, Quebec and Ontario with a moving bonus.

Alberta is Calling: Moving Bonus

Eligible individuals can receive a one-time $5,000 refundable tax credit if they move to Alberta, work in an eligible occupation and meet all eligibility criteria outlined below:

• Must be 18 years or older at the time of application
• Must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident
• Must have moved to Alberta between May 1, 2024 and December 31, 2024
• Must be a resident of Alberta for at least 12 consecutive months at the time of application
• Must be a tax resident of Alberta on December 31, 2024
  • You must have received your 2024 Notice of Assessment from the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA).
• Must be employed or self-employed and working in an eligible occupation. To view a complete list of eligible trades, click here.
• Must meet the requirements outlined for employed and self-employed applicants
  • Employed Applicants
    • Must be working full-time at the time of application, in at least one eligible occupation
      • Working full-time is defined as either working at least 30 hours a week or at least 130 hours a month.
    • Must provide proof of employment
      • Read the Alberta is Calling: Moving Bonus Application Guidelines for details of acceptable supporting documentation.
    • Self-Employed Applicants
      • Must be self-employed in an eligible occupation and be able to provide documentation to validate sufficient business activity in Alberta
        • This includes demonstrating at least $2000 in gross revenue from performing their eligible occupation for the month prior to time of application.
